About Friends of the Potomac River Refuges

Founded in 2002 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, the Friends of the Potomac River Refuges promote conservation, awareness, and appreciation of the wildlife and habitats of the Potomac River National Wildlife Refuge Complex and to provide assistance to refuge programs. The complex is comprised of three important sanctuaries along the Potomac River, just south of our Nation's capitol: Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck NWR, Occoquan Bay NWR, and Featherstone NWR.

What does the Friends of the Potomac River Refuges do?

  • Assist refuge staff with organizing & staffing refuge events
  • Advocate for the Potomac River Refuges and the National Wildlife Refuge System &
    Provide written testimony to the House Appropriations Subcommittee
  • Assist with financial obligations of the Refuge
  • Assist with Refuge community awareness and outreach

As a member, you can:
  • volunteer to help during Refuge events
  • support the Refuges in times of shrinking federal budgets
  • volunteer to help on Friends' committees
And, as a member, your membership benefits include:

  • invitations to special events and programs
  • opportunities to take action in preserving the wildlife in our community
