Friends of the Potomac River Refuges assist Refuge staff with many projects to enhance the refuges and also to help provide a positive outdoor experience for visitors through community outreach events such as the Fall Wildlife Festival.
FOPRR members lead the annual cleanup of Featherstone NWR that takes place in March and assist with the annual ExxonMobil April cleanup at Occoquan Bay NWR.
FOPRR members lead and participate in biological surveys helping identify wildlife and plant species.
Friends' volunteers joined Refuge staff on Saturday, March 5 to help with the construction of three shade shelters over existing benches at Occoquan Bay NWR. These shelters will provide shade from the sun and protection from the rain for visitors at the Refuge. Locations of the shelters are: midway along Fox Road, near the large sycamore on Charlie Road, and near the "ballfield" parking lot.
