Lecture on Monarch Butterfly tagging & migration (pre-festival event)

Come learn fascinating facts about monarch butterflies and their incredible migratory journey to Mexico. These butterflies face many challenges as they migrate to Mexico. Start with a 90% mortally rate and you get an idea of just how miraculous a journey this is. Come out to Veteran's Park to hear Larry Brindza speak about tagging Monarchs in Virginia and Maryland's Eastern Shore, and also about his travels to Mexico to visit their winter home south of the border.

5th Annual Fall Wildlife Festival
Saturday, October 11, 2008 | 9am - 3pm @ Occoquan Bay NWR
Come out to the refuge for a day of fun and interactive wildlife experiences. Help us celebrate National Wildlife Refuge week as well as the 10th anniversary of Occoquan Bay NWR. It's fun for the whole family!
Among the attractions will be:
- wildlife presentations by the Wildlife Center of Virginia
- wildlife presentations by Reptiles Alive
- guided nature walks
- hourly bird walks by the Northern Virgina Bird Club
- hourly hay rides around the refuge
- the U.S. Fish & Wildlife bird banding station (come see native birds up close!)
- appearances by The Blue Goose and "Teddy" Roosevelt
- Owl hooting contest
- Face painter and balloon animal creations
Don't forget your wallet for:
- Renewing or signing up for a Friends membership
- Silent auction (items include artwork, binoculars, etc.)

U.S. Post Office selling the 75th Anniversary Duck Stamps (10am-12pm)

FOPRR is looking for volunteers on Friday, Oct. 10th (help set up tents, tables, and chairs) and the day of the event, Oct. 11th, from 9am to 3pm (to help direct parking traffic, general event help, and assisting in festival clean-up). Email us if you can help!
