Have you ever wondered what flora and fauna you might see when you visit a park? A newly published set of seasonal information sheets has been published by The Audubon Society of Nothern Virginia (ASNV) and the Friends of the Potomac River Refuges (FOPRR) for the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. These sheets can guide you during your visits and help you identify the most common natural elements you are likely to experience.
How were these lists comprised?
The Audubon Society of Nothern Virginia has sponsored on-going surveys on the site of Occoquan Bay NWR since March of 1989. Field work began before the refuge was established, when the site was an active army post. Preliminary survey information was used in restoration and reuse planning for the site's closing. Volunteer naturalists from ASNV and FOPRR and other environmental groups provide inventory data on birds and other wildlife that can be used to inform planning and management of the refuge and surrounding areas. Intially, efforts focused on identifying seneitive natural areas and on bird life. The scope widened later to include butterflies, dragonflies, and other wildlife.
Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who, over nearly 20 years, have documented and extraordinary community of wildlife (237 bird species, 74 butterflies, 59 dragonflies, as well as scores of other wildlife).
